Bodbuilding Federation

I am

RIBBF Background:

The Republic of Ireland bodybuilding Federation (RIBBF) was founded in 1981, its existence came about through the serious lack of representation of Irish athletes at International events both on a competitive level and an official level. The RIBBF is affiliated to the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB), which is the 5th largest sports organisation in the world with 193 member nations. The IFBB is the only governing body for the sport of bodybuilding to be provisionally recognised by the International Olympic Committee, and is currently one of the main sports in the International World Games. The IFBB was founded in 1946 by brothers Joe and Ben Weider, Ben Weider went on to be nominated for the Nobel Peace prize for his work through the medium of bodybuilding.

"In sport, there are no limitations, no barriers of race, religion, politics or culture. In sport, we are in touch with each other. Bodybuilding is important for Nation Building" Ben Weider, C.M., C.Q., SBStJ, Ph.D., IFBB President

The international men’s team is made up of seven athletes, who qualify through the National Championships. The RIBBF has two European Gold medallists to date, John Carroll, Bray, Co. Wicklow and Jim Butler Limerick. There is also one IFBB Professional bodybuilder Sean Bullman, Limerick.

An executive committee governs the RIBBF. The executive committee is:

Mike Bullman, Limerick

Head Judge

Tara O’Carroll, Dublin

Athletes Representatives

John Carroll, Bray / Sean Bullman, Limerick

North East Division Area

Noel McPartlin, Dublin

South West Division Area

Eddie Walsh, Waterford

The RIBBF is self-financed through profits made from contests held throughout the year i.e. Two Regional National Qualifiers and the National Championships, sponsors of these events help increase the RIBBF funds. These funds are then used to send the National team to the European and World Championships each year and to host the three contests throughout the year.

Key Issues:

The International Team

The IFBB uses the IOC List of Banned and Restricted Substances and Banned Methods. The IFBB uses the IOC Sampling Procedures in Doping Control, which includes the use of IOC-approved Doping Control kits. The IFBB uses only laboratories from the List of IOC Accredited Laboratories. The RIBBF penalties for a Doping Offence are: a two-year suspension for a first-offence and a lifetime suspension for a second-offence.

The National Level

The RIBBF does not support the use of Tobacco or alcohol companies as sponsors for its events. The RIBBF aims at promoting the sport of bodybuilding and the healthy lifestyle associated with working out and keeping fit.

Republic of Ireland Bodbuilding Federation

Due to the national situation in 2020 the spring classic and national championships were cancelled. Gyms and health studios were closed thereby denying the competitors in our sport the opportunity to train. Our sport has increased in popularity over the years with competitors representing their country by winning many European and world championships without the sponsorship that other elite sports enjoy. The NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS will be held at the UNIVERSITY CONCERT HALL LIMERICK on the 9th October 2021. the combined entry/membership form will be available on in 2 weeks time.

The entry/membership fees are presently under review at this time to take into account the finance required for the National Championships. The new forms will be available shortly . I will contact those that have sent in their entry on last years form, the new forms will have the fee adjustments.

The Republic of Ireland Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation ( RIBBF ) is affiliated to the IFBB International Federation.

The IFBB affiliates National Federations from 199 countries and is a member of the Sport Accord (former General Association of International Sports Federations – GAISF) and the International World Games Association (IWGA); it is recognized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and over 90 National Olympic Committees (NOCs); as well as being a member of the World Anti-Doping Agency, that has recognized the IFBB as the only authority in bodybuilding, whose anti-doping program is in full compliance with the WADA Code.
